The Veterans Mural

We had been kicking around the idea of a mural on the alley side of our building for a while and it just so happened that Versailles artist and Sons of the Legion member, Stephen Sawyer has had a passion project of a specfic mural in mind for quite a while.  Post 67 then commissioned this mural to be done by Mr. Sawyer.

The service members depicted along the bottom represent different eras of our military and the face of all but the female pilot depcits a local Veteran.  From the left:

  • The Continental soldier of the Revolutionary War is Capt. William P. Black.   He served in the US Army during the Civil War, 1861-1864.   He was the first Medal of Honor recipient from Kentucky and the only one born in Woodford County.   The Medal of Honor was awarded to him for his actions at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, March 7-8, 1862.  Our Post's meeting/bingo hall is named in his honor.

  • The Civil War soldier is Rev. Floyd Green who served 6 years in the US Army and is a member of Woodford Post 67.

  • The World War I Doughboy is Mr. Jack Kain.  Founder of Jack Kain Ford.  He served in the US Air Force 1951-1953.

  • The World War II medic is Mr. Don Richerson.

  • The pilot does not yet represent a local Veteran.  If someone wants to fill that position, please contact our Post or Mr. Sawyer.

  • The sailor is US Navy Veteran Mr. Charles W. Sawyer.

  • The Gulf War era Veteran is Mr. John McKinney.  He served in the US Army 1960-1964 and was a long-time member of Woodford Post 67, holding many offices in the Post including Commander.

  • The dog, although not representing any one in particular, pays homage to all of the animals of a variety of species that have served in the US Military since the services were founded.

Small prints of the mural can be purchased at Woodford Post 67.
